Dushanbe Hosted an International Disability Forum

An international disability forum issues was held today, October 18, at the National Library of Tajikistan. Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan Azim Ibrohim, Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan Nasim Olimzoda, UN Permanent Representative in Tajikistan Pratibha Mehta, Head of the WHO Representation in Tajikistan Tasnim Atatrah, Board Secretary of the European Disability Forum Gunta Anca, representatives of the ministries and agencies, civil society organizations, national associations of disabled, international NGOs and other development partners attended the forum.

Before the event’s start, guests visited the forum’s exhibition. The exhibition featured various types of medicines, achievements of the country’s medical scientists, orthopedic and prosthetic products of local production as well as handicrafts.

While opening the forum, Nasim Olimzoda emphasized the support of the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to these layers of society.

It was noted that social protection of the population, including disabled, is one of the most important directions of President’s social policy. Since independence, the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan has taken significant measures to provide social guarantees for disabled, and the country has fully developed and implemented a legal framework for their social protection.

Azim Ibrohim said in his speech said that since State independence disabled are on the spotlight of the Government.

It was stated that on March 2018 in New York City, the President Emomali Rahmon signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD).

The UN CRPD was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 13, 2006 and following ratification by the 20th party, it came into force on 3 May 2008. Following the Convention’s enactment, the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was established with 18 members.

Then, forum’s high-ranking guests delivered speech and expressed their gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan for holding such a high level event.

The forum’s plenary sessions were followed in four sections, with presentations by national and international scholars.

Also, a press conference on the analysis of the situation of disabled in the country and other aspects of the field was held with the participation of mass media representatives during the forum. The Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan Shodikhon Jamshed, Head of WHO Representative in Tajikistan Tasnim Atatrah and industry officials attended the press conference and answered journalists’ questions.

Following the plenary session, the Dushanbe Disability Declaration was adopted.

A cultural and entertaining event was held with the participation of disabled at the ebd of the forum.

Then Nasim Olimzoda handed over diplomas to the participants of the concert program.
