On September 22, per World Health Organization Mission in Tajikistan initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population, a roundtable was held in Dushanbe on restricting the use of tobacco products.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population Samariddin Alizoda, a representative of the Representatives’ Assembly Jamshed Murtazozoda and representatives of a number of ministries and departments.
Alizoda opened the event and noted that the Law of Tajikistan “On Restriction of the Use of Tobacco Products” was adopted in 2018 in the new edition after the reviewing and taking into account the country’s accession to the WHO Convention on Tobacco Control.
In his speech, Murtazazoda noted that the Government of Tajikistan has taken a number of important measures to prevent the use of tobacco products, as evidenced by the programs and documents adopted in this area.
It was noted that today smoking is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality, which is a matter of concern for international organizations and countries.
The head of the Ministry’s Department of Sanitary and Epidemiological Safety, Emergencies and Emergency Medical Services Suhrob Vohidov said that according to the WHO, about 5 million people die each year from smoking-related diseases and by 2030 it will increase to 10 million people. The highest mortality predicted in developing countries. The current and future spread of the nicotine epidemic around the world testifies to the need for international measures to combat smoking.
