Today, on May 18, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Tajikistan delivered 13 tons of necessary medical supplies to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of Tajikistan to tackle COVID-19.
The shipment includes essential personal protective equipment (PPE) and comprises 36,250 protective coveralls, 40,320 N95 medical masks, and 720 thermometers. This shipment is the first out of four organised by the European Union and UNICEF and makes up 30% of the agreed 64 tonnes worth of equipment procured by UNICEF as part of the European Union’s contribution to Tajikistan’s emergency COVID-19 response.
All materials are purchased on the basis of the list of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of Tajikistan and will be delivered directly to selected medical institutions of the country.
The delivering ceremony was attended by the First Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population of Tajikistan Saida Umarzoda, EU Ambassador to Tajikistan Marilyn Josefson, Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Tajikistan Zainab Al-Azzawi.
On behalf of the Government, Saida Umarzoda expressed gratitude to the EU Delegation and the UNICEF in Tajikistan for such support and assessed this assistance as the continuation of mutually beneficial cooperation.
Ms Marilyn Josefson said that now is the time for cooperation and solidarity, as the virus does not discriminate between people or borders.
“As one of the leading donors supporting the healthcare system in Tajikistan, the European Union has strengthened its support and reoriented priorities to assist in the country’s COVID-19 response,” added she.
